A Marathon Diary

You will be familiar with the concept that bad things come along in threes? It’s not right. It’s fours.

Yesterday I took the frustrating decision to pull out of the Leeds Half marathon.

I haven’t trained for three weeks due to injuring my Achilles. Since that really quite gutting moment, my father in law has had a serious fall which put him in hospital at the beginning of the family holiday; I have had painful gastritis and may have a stomach ulcer; and my wife has now tested positive for Covid.

Under the new guidelines the kids and I can continue, but my wife hasn’t been at home for the last two weeks (due to her father’s fall) – and now I’m denied spending time with her again… And have to sleep on the sofa. Hard to take.

Still. I am not being shelled. I am not having to leave my home, or risk losing family members. In the grand scheme of things, we’re still fine. Nothing to see here.

This also reminds me that we never really see the struggles of others unless we get to know them (or listen to them for long enough)…

If you can, keep on running. I will rise again.

God bless you

Marathon Update

I have never had a serious injury before. I’m really anxious that I won’t make it around the Leeds Half in May. It’s nearly two weeks since I trained. Two weeks.

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m really missing not running. I hope I’ll be back soon.

God bless athletes everywhere.
